Une convention a été signée avec la Fondation Mossadegh, qui financera l’enseignement.
The University of Geneva (UNIGE) is partnering with the Mossadegh Foundation in the field of Iranology. The two institutions have signed a partnership agreement aimed at establishing Iranian studies in Geneva. Starting in September, a 40% lecturer position titled “Persian studies” will open. “The idea was to introduce elements of Iranian and Persian culture to the university. The position will be attached to the Faculty of Arts,” explains Francesca Serra, dean of the faculty and professor in the Italian studies unit at UNIGE. “Two years ago, we discussed possible funding with the Mossadegh Foundation. They generously offered to fund this position. We are very pleased about this new course. We have many specialties within the faculty, many disciplines such as Armenian or Mesopotamian studies. It’s important for us to have different research focuses. This new course will bring broad interdisciplinary openness to our faculty.”
Getting to Know Iran
Founded in 2002 by Mr. Majid Bayat, grandson of Mohammed Mossadegh, the foundation takes its name from this former Iranian prime minister who left his mark on his country’s political life during the 20th century. Its goal is to provide accessible, in-depth knowledge of Iran through its culture, history, religions, and geopolitical situation. It makes numerous books and objects available to the public in its library on Place d’Armes in Carouge.
A unique case
From now on, in what is a unique case in the Swiss academic world, the University of Geneva is offering Persian studies in collaboration with this foundation. Its president, Farhad Diba, is delighted: “Our foundation wants to promote the history and culture of the Iranian world, and this partnership with UNIGE goes exactly in that direction. We are thrilled, because it took us almost two years to get here, but the university helped us a great deal.”
